PW EoM Comments and Issues

I looked through some of your EoMs and feel that a format will be really useful for you. Some of you never address issues of reliablity and credibility.

If you recall Ms Ang Huey Min's lecture on EoM Writing, she went through a sample EoM for all of you.

Log on to MI Link -> Click on "Repository" -> Click on folder "09 PW"

You will find the sample EoM there. You may want to structure your EoM like that, with clearer subheadings. Or even the MCYS sample I gave out in class can be used.

EoM is a good place to earn for "analysis and evaluation" especially evaluation of ideas and source. You can earn for "generation of ideas" if you explain what ideas you can develop from the article. Follow the steps below, plus work on Reliability of Information, and I think you won't go wrong.

Step 1: Choose one key / important idea in the article.
Step 2: Analyse the idea chosen.
Step 3: Evaluate the idea. Easiest way of evaluation is to discuss usefulness /relevance of the idea to your project and why.
Step 4: Generate ideas from the analysis done - e.g. what important questions have been raised and what you intend to do about these questions.
Step 5: Check number of words - aim for 600-610 words. Repeat steps 1-4 until you reach 600-610 words.
Step 6: Evaluate the source (author and publisher) either at the beginning or the end of your EoM - you decide.

IMPORTANT: How to work on "Reliability of information"?

ü Evaluate the source - author (expert? biased? relevant?), owner of website or publisher of book / magazine / newspaper (expert? biased? relevant? current or up-to-date?).

ü Evaluate, if possible, whether other sources say the same thing or whether your own survey / interviews get similar information. Is the information different because of context, e.g. USA vs Singapore, 1980's vs 2000's, adults vs adolescents, polytechnic vs private school?

Usefulness of information to your project

ü Evaluate the usefulness or relevance of the ideas / material to your project. Discuss / explain how it supports your claims or substantiates your arguments. Discuss at least 2 or 3 points from the material.

ü Analyse what the author is saying - break down difficult ideas into ones that fit or support your project. Use the author's ideas to support ideas / claims in your project. Use the author's ideas as reasons for … (whatever in your project). Make inferences, cull underlying ideas. Compare ideas with other ideas from another article/source if possible. [BUT DON'T GET CARRIED AWAY! REMEMBER, WORD COUNT IS IMPORTANT!]

ü Build on what is said to generate ideas for your project, i.e. develop ideas from the material. Evaluate the pros and cons of your ideas using the material as comparison.

I managed to talk to everyone or at least, your parent.

So, you would be receiving the Travel Declaration forms via postal mail. If no, download from the MI Link, complete it, get it signed by your parent(s) and bring it.

So, on the first day of school (29 June), here's what you need to do:-

1) Come early for exam. If it is 8.30am paper, be in school at exam venue by 7.45am or 8am. If it is 1.00pm paper, be in school at exam venue by 12.15 or 12.30pm. [For Friday afternoon paper, be at the exam venue by 2.30pm.] THESE TIMINGS WILL APPLY THROUGHOUT THE EXAM PERIOD.

2) One 1st day of exam, bring your travel declaration form and ODT (bring ODT everyday) for temperature taking.

Do drop me an SMS if in doubt.

For the pre-training preparations, please help me check if attendees of the session have a digital library membership or not. Last session, we wasted a lot of time to check their accounts. For those who already have a membership, they will need to know their user name & pass word so that they can use the online databases etc.

If they have forgotten or are not sure if they have a membership, please have students call up 6332 3255 (press option 8 to speak to the customer service officer). My colleagues can verify if they have a membership or not, as well as on the students' usernames if they have forgotten.

For those who have forgotten their password, my colleagues can also reset their passwords for them immediately. For students who do not yet have accounts, it will be useful for them to register for this account. They can do so at http://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/index.aspx.

Registration is free for current library members. PRs & Foreigners who do not have a library account with the public libraries will have to subscribe to a public library membership first before picking up their digital library membership. There will be fees involved for this. Membership is free for Singaporeans.

If there are PRs & foreigner students who do not wish to have a public library account, then it will be good to have them pair up with another student who has access to the digital library. Then they can share the access for the purpose of the hands-on session.

If they have any issues with their account, they can also call up 6332 3255.

Some of you still not getting it. For Choice of Topic, it should focus more on Bullet 2!!! Refer to my earlier posting.

That means Hotel New World Collapse cannot be your choice of topic. That is because, that has already happened. Hence, it is an emergency that addresses Bullet 1. It should come in to help in your Reasons for Choice of Topic.

Choice of Topic will then be, for example, a school collapse or something like that. This is answering Bullet 2.

hello 08b6 people !

I will be organising a class outing on this coming thursday 3rd July'08. 10a.m at habourfront mrt control station. Well, i do hope everyone can try to make it as its our first class outing. :D

Its confirmed. These are the details of our CIP Day programme. There will be 3 teams within our class and we will just focus on Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) and its messages.

What to do: BYOB Presentation (Skit) in the hall (9 – 9.30 am) & Static Display at the canteen

Hence, here's what we need t0:

- BYOB Slides: the slides we have are quite good; need to modify, make it more suitable for primary school students (which was the feedback given during the auditions).

- Skit: The skit needs to be longer; can the script-writers please work on this? I know Brian worked on the original script. We need to bring across the message in a very fun way. Brian shall also serve as the director of the skit component, to ensure that the acting is up to the mark (also because he was a very effective Shakespeare, really). Brian, feel free to grab whoever you want from class to assist you in this.

- Actors + Props: Obviously, as we are going to 2 schools to present the skit (Canberra and Unity Primary schools), we need 2 set of actors and props.

- Static Display: we need 3 sets of the same displays (for 3 schools); can those who originally worked on the static display take charge and work on this?

Jing Wen will be coordinating the efforts (please give me a status update on Monday, Jing Wen). She has some guidelines about the expectations, as well. Please cooperate with her. This is a class effort, and I really don't want any free-riders. With combined effort, we can pull this off very well.

Many thanks to Afian for his step-by-step guidance on how to post. I realised where I made the mistake. I typed '08B6' instead of '08b6'. But no matter! The King has arrived.

Just a few reminders for the upcoming week:-

1) IRP Files - please file properly and get your responses in order.
2) CIP Day - Dengue and BYOB - auditions on 28 April at 5.10pm.
3) Earthweek Submission (designers, please get it done ASAP; thanks!)

Also, please access MI Link and get your notes from there. I will upload material whenever I can. We really ought to use the internet for our learning.

I also want to share with you the screenshot of last week's IRP Discussion. Thanks to the team that shared (Yong Quan, Farhana, Melissa, Adli and Sha).

Also, many thanks to the Abnormalites who helped in making this Blog possible. Can we get the whole class to check in and participate? I think its a great way of communicating, as well as getting information across.

Inter Class Poster Design Competiton(overdue)

-participation objective:to design an attractive and informative poster that not only highlights environmental concerns but also provides useful information for the viewer.

-Each class is given an A3 sized cardboard backing for the design of the poster

-Posters must utilise recycled materials as far as possible

-The competition will involve both judging by a panel of teachers (60%) and 40 % by students

-Judging Criteria

a)Concept and Idea

b)Value and credibility of information provided

c)Visual appeal and accessibility

d)Environmentally sensitive use of materials

bring some recycled materials tomoro and come up with some ideas.Aly will design it tomoro.and i think i suck as class rep=(

Hello!
I'm finally here...
Something went wrong yesterday and I can't log in. (Computer is getting old...) LOL.

Looks like Mr Idris have a hard time trying to log in.
Click on "Log In" at the top right hand corner.
Type in the email and password. (erhemms, the one that they wrote on the board)
It will direct you to a page. Then just click "new post".

Anyways, weekends are always sooooo short...!

hahahaha.it seems that Aly was the first to post.hehehe.its Friday night people and i hope all of you are doing fine.the assignments are coming in and there are tests after tests but do not worry cause i believe we will get through this as one whole big family together with Mr Idris and Mrs Tan.be proactive guys instead of reactive.im suggesting a class identity(e.g T-Shirts,jerseys or anything).drop comments people.oh gosh.a busy Saturday coming up.
